What Is Solution-Focused Therapy?

Solution-focused therapy (also called Solution-Focused Brief Therapy, or SFBT) is a short-term, goal-oriented approach that centers on where you want to go rather than spending most of your sessions reviewing where things went wrong.

A therapist working in this model is genuinely curious about your strengths, your past successes, and the times when the problem felt smaller or more manageable. Those moments are not dismissed as coincidences. They are treated as real evidence of your existing capabilities, and the work builds from there.

Sessions tend to be practical and forward-moving. You will still have space to talk about what is difficult, but the emphasis stays on identifying small, concrete steps you can take and noticing the progress you are already making, even if it feels modest right now.

Who Can Benefit from Solution-Focused Therapy?

This approach works well for a wide range of people and situations. Patients who tend to find it especially helpful include those dealing with:

  • Anxiety and stress that feels stuck or circular
  • Depression, low motivation, or a sense of being disconnected from daily life
  • Relationship difficulties, communication problems, or recurring conflicts
  • Work-related burnout or adjustment challenges
  • Grief, major life transitions, or feelings of uncertainty about the future
  • Low self-confidence or a persistent sense of falling short

Solution-focused therapy is also a good fit for people who have tried other forms of therapy and found extended, deep-dive approaches exhausting, or for those who simply want a more action-oriented experience. It is used with adults, adolescents, and in couples or family settings.

What Happens in a Session of Solution-Focused Therapy?

Your therapist will ask thoughtful questions designed to help you get clear on what you actually want your life to look like. One common question used in this model is the “miracle question”: if you woke up tomorrow and the problem had significantly improved, what would be different? What would you notice first? What would the people around you notice?

This is not a visualization exercise for its own sake. It helps you put into words a specific, achievable picture of progress, which makes it much easier to start working toward it in real, practical ways.

From there, sessions often involve exploring exceptions. These are the times the problem is less intense or less frequent, and looking closely at what conditions made that possible. Together with your therapist, you identify what you can do more of, what small changes are within reach this week, and how to recognize progress as it happens.

Sessions are typically 45 to 50 minutes. Many patients see meaningful change within 6 to 12 sessions, though the timeline depends on what you are working on and what pace feels right for you.

How Solution-Focused Therapy Fits Into Your Overall Care at Your Local Psychiatrist

At Your Local Psychiatrist, we take an individualized approach to every patient. Solution-focused therapy is one of several evidence-based modalities our therapists are trained in, and it is often used alongside or integrated with other approaches such as cognitive behavioral techniques, mindfulness-based practices, or medication management when appropriate.

If you are already seeing a psychiatrist or nurse practitioner on our team for medication, adding solution-focused therapy sessions can strengthen your overall treatment plan. The two work well together: medication can help stabilize mood and reduce the intensity of symptoms, while therapy gives you concrete tools to build on that stability.
